What Should You Set Your Thermostat to in the Summer?

Air conditioning helps us escape from the summer heat. But deciding on what temperature to maintain in your home requires a balance between comfort and cost. The lower/colder you set your thermostat, the higher your energy bills will be. Here are some tips to keep you comfortable and save you money.

The Best Thermostat Temperature Settings When You’re at Home

The U.S. Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat to 78F when you are home. This allows you to stay cool and avoid a high electric bill.

Finding the Right Temperature for Your Home

According to (ASHRAE), the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers, the most popular temperature range for people indoors, wearing summer clothing is from 73F to 79F. To determine the right temperature for you, try this: set your thermostat to 76F for a few hours. Then, raise the temperature 1F each day and see how your family reacts. Do this gradually. You’ll be surprised how comfortable 80 degrees can be!

When you go to sleep, your core body temperature lowers. If you want to enjoy a good night’s sleep during the summer, set your thermostat to 80F-82F or so. Use a ceiling fan to keep air circulating.

Get a Programmable Thermostat

Smart/programmable thermostats allow you to set different temperatures based on factors like the time of day, when you’re home and when the house is empty, and then forget about it. You can set your AC to begin cooling your house 30 minutes before you arrive in the warm summer months, so your interior is comfortable when you step inside. Smart thermostats also allow you to control the temperature from your smartphone or tablet.
